Barton Portal

Project details

Programme
Unit Studio 2A
Year 2

Oxford is a city growing against its rural edge. New developments form vast areas of residential buildings; these often ignore the need for public space. The project aims to create portals for interaction across Barton, an area currently being developed. The proposal aims to create a range of public spaces, to increase social well-being by encouraging interaction and exchange between residents, including parts of the community that have been excluded through the developer’s tick-boxing attitude to section 106.

Cafe + Cornershop

This axonometric drawing shows the interior of the main building. On the ground floor there is a south-facing café and a north-facing corner shop.

The Barton 'picturesque'

Ideas for an imagined picturesque landscape was explored by collaging the rural land and the linear park at the northern edge of the development.

Market

Standing in a courtyard looking south, the residential buildings are partly shrouded from view. This is a social space and at certain times of the year it hosts events and markets.

Picturesque

A north-facing view from the corner shop window. This looks through the site and onto the rural landscape beyond. From this view, the greenery ties the site to the landscape in the distance.

Plan of New Public Landscape

The buildings create a public space portal from the road to the park.
