The Island of Water

Project details

Programme
Unit PG10
Year 5

Idiosyncrasy is seeking refuge from the inhospitable. It allows a yearning for what we often take for granted. Without resorting to colonising the local ecology, how can landscapes provide humans all the resources required for living?

Situated on Christmas Island, this project challenges the notion of yearning and critiques consumeristic human behaviours. A slow-paced development choreographed by nature, the new inhabitable landscape acts as an interface for the symbiotic relationship between ecology and humans, aiming to strike a balance between nature and the built form. This education and research community provides a radical repositioning on what constitutes ‘living within our means’. In order to save humans from themselves, they must protect nature first.
