The people of Morfa Borth face an uncertain future, labelled as the first ‘climate refugees’ in the UK following a report stating the community would not receive the necessary funding to protect the town from sea level rise. The residents banded together to preserve the soul of the community by mobilising to start their journey to higher ground and safety.
This project explores how we combat climate issues surrounding coastal retreat as well as commenting and critiquing the way we live and interact in our current communities. Tales from the Flood speculates on an alternate future where coastal communities that are experiencing rapid change act as a testbed to re-evaluate the way we live and engender thoughts about the environment, as well as how we remember and immortalise these fallen landmarks.
Grounded in communal ritual traditions that mirror the old, Morfa Borth will act as an example of progressive, environmentally conscious living, a symbol of resilience and hope that future developments can learn from.
Life in a fictional landscape that seeks to engender thoughts about our long term future footprint on the Earth. This is achieved by visually expressing the geological forces at work through a series of catalytic architectural interventions.
This comic strip depicts a series of environmentally conscious rituals, aimed at promoting community engagement in tackling wider global climatic issues through a number of sustainable practices.
The Four Faced Inn pays homage to the four pubs abandoned to the sea in the town of Morfa Borth. Rotating every 6 hours, The Four Faced Inn celebrates these lost monuments by welcoming locals and visitors through its shifting facade.
Sketching and story arc curation were crucial in exploring the practical and cultural logistics involved in the move, with members of the community adapting their daily routine and lifestyle in an ever changing, ever evolving situation.
The project culminates in a story-book about the people of Morfa Borth as they begin their 10-year journey to safety. Three protagonists tell the story of shifting daily life in the vanishing landscape, whilst preserving the soul of their community.
