Re-Inventing the Longhouse

Project details

Programme
Unit PG13
Year 5

The Longhouse project is focused on developing the cultural identity of Wolin Island.

After II WW the material history of the Eastern Borderland was left behind, but the immaterial traditions of care, culture, and knowledge carried often by women in the community are not lost entirely. The change of focus from material history to the history of care could result in a new attitude towards built space and community.

This project’s aim is to develop a seasonal cultural centre focused on craft and a mix of cultural influences brought to this region from the Eastern Borderlands and Viking culture. It does so through the focus on traditional cooking, sewing, knitting, and folk medicinal knowledge which are the main carriers of the unwritten traditions passed from generation to generation. The design process is based on adapting invisible labour principles of care, value, and community in order to build the relationship of the community with the land and create a building suited for their needs.

Site Searching

The exact location for the building is established through site searching. The purpose of the search is to create a closer relation to the site and assemble an initial community.

The Longhouse

The Viking longhouse becomes a typology for the cultural centre. Its historical community and craft focus roots the project within the rich history of the island, becoming a starting point for a form of development suited for today's community.

Landscape Mapping

The landscape markers connected to the totems create a web of links by highlighting important spots within the landscape.

Knitting

The shape of the façade and the textile itself is a canvas for the creativity of the community.
