The devastating Yakutian wildfire (2021) was the largest wildfire in the world to date, and occurred on a delicate landscape of thawing permafrost. This project is dedicated to the crisis of the annual wildfires in Siberia.
Cleared by the blazes, Byas Kuel village has been chosen as a test-bed site for an experimental rural facility and serves as part of a larger master plan to improve the current fire fighting system.
The proposal is a hybrid typology of fire station and biofuel production factory, which reuses the burnt wood from surrounding forests. The project is deployed across multiple sites: the permafrost deformed fields and the burnt forest. Its architecture rethinks centuries-old fire-resilient construction methods and vernacular building typologies by creating contemporary forms, facilitating a new sustainable economy that celebrates Yakutian and Siberian cultures.
