Finding Common Ground and Resilience by the River Lea

Project details

Programme
Unit UG1
Year 2

The project creates a design that uncovers, transforms, and maintains a piece of land in the Lea Valley for the next 150 years, or more, through an embedded, adaptable, and elevating vision.

The land chosen for the project has been neglected for years, primarily used as a location for a bus depot. New ideas have promised to turn the valley into a green leisure destination. This design retains the building's history and adapts it to the space and the potential of the structure.

Data from an onsite investigation revealed that the soil was suitable for rammed-earth design. The area is converted into a rammed earth block factory and a residential building with common areas.

The project showcases how a rammed earth factory might alter and inspire neighbourhood restoration and demonstrates how rammed earth structures can resist harsh conditions.

Exploded Proposal, Functions of the Building

The building functions as a factory at ground level and continues to floors of residential and common spaces. The proposal divides the old bus depot into multiple paths that connect to the river site.

How Construction Will Change in the Next 50 Years

A rammed earth factory operates while the structure of the design begins. The design is now a rammed earth factory and residential space.

Plan at River Path Level

Plan at River Path Level

Spaces are organised for inhabitants to feel closer to the riverside, including courtyards, river platforms and interior staircase views.

Section Through Wall of Residential Units

Timber structure forms a grid to hold up rammed earth blocks. The method is implemented to ensure that the rammed earth walls are fully supported by concrete columns and a rammed earth infill.

Residential Comfort

Residential Comfort

Summer and winter days in the residential spaces. When viewed from distinct viewpoints and heights, the residential unit takes on the role of a symbol of resilience. The concept explores indoor and external areas.
