Change is inevitable, but change can be predictable.
This project looks at ways that can provide infrastructure for inhabiting the area in the Lower Lea Valley, Poplar – which is currently planned to become largely residential – that consider and appreciate the potential of the site.
The accent of the design is inspired by the orientation of spaces in the past with necessary changes.
The forms of the new building are inspired by the natural landscape that is going to be created by the changes in the future.
The building is structurally strong and designed in a way that is flexible and has the potential to change into a residential tower with almost twice as many stories than its original construction.
The structure and positioning of the building walls are based on the idea of the 9-grid house. The design is inspired by the historical language of the area and the terraced houses.
The factory is made from CLT, to stand as an example of the final product that celebrates the material and brings the community together. The same strategy is applied to the construction of a pedestrian bridge.
