The cultural centre, located in the Caribbean region of north Colombia, is a zone combating the inevitable effects of severe ecological changes caused by pollution and rising sea levels over the next century. The ethos of the programme sparks a renewed ecological consciousness and uses sound as a tool that stimulates the growth of bamboo.
The cultural centre seeks to continue and expand the Hernando Chindoy Universidad’s educational ecosystem across the country, and to allow members of all social groups to enter this neutral political zone (despite ongoing political and ethnic conflict in the country). The cultural centre functions symbiotically for humans and nature, as bamboo is cultivated sustainably and for public entertainment events.
This project endeavours to create an education and performance hub facility that draws attention to the importance of a sensitive relationship with the natural world.
The ground floor is left as open as possible to allow for access onto the site from various points.
The first floor contains classrooms and media rooms and provides access and views to the central stage.
The robotic framework controls the ropes and rings and the manipulation of movement is stimulated according to the dynamic sound source positioning. The bamboo culms benefit in their health and growth rate from music exposure.
The ropes and rings are made using compressed organic matter from the decomposing onsite trees. Micro-organisms, therefore, feed upon the rope and rings instead of the bamboo.
The central performance space folds entertainment into political, ecological and social engagement.
