Non-Fungible Architecture

Project details

Programme
Unit UG14
Year 3

In response to Stoke-on-Trent's rich ceramic history and declining economy, the project proposes a mint that produces an alternative clay currency and a pottery workshop for six artisans who collaborate to create unique ceramic artworks to be sold as NFTs. Reinterpreting the themes of transparency, randomness, uniqueness, and encryption, the architecture is a metaphor for the blockchain to amplify the value of the objects made in the building. The programme celebrates the uniqueness and imperfections of ceramic handcraft through architecture and questions the dialectics of financial and craft value.

The framed views of the layered spaces in the building bring visitors on a journey; at the same time, controlling how the knowledge of craft is shared and creating moments of obstruction and illusion during the secretive parts of the crafting process. It explores how the unpredictability, imperfection and uniqueness of handcraft can be brought into the digital fabrication of the building and create a ‘Non-Fungible’ experience.

Pottery Workshop Interior

Internal view from the public’s entrance into the pottery workshop. Light, material and colour is used to guide users into the central crafting space.

Narrative

The film narrative follows the ritualistic crafting processes in the building from the perspective of the three users: ceramicists, minters, and the public.

First Floor Plan Drawing

Exterior View / 3D print test

Design of building is inspired by the outcome of physical 3D printing tests, which reflect ideas of uniqueness of handcraft in the digital.
