The project proposes a design process and site-preparation strategy that will interrogate the Isle of Portland’s constantly altering landscape. By exploiting and merging digital fabrication methods with traditional artisanal qualities, this project aims to preserve, record, and rebroadcast the authentic bygone spatial identities of the island.
The interrogation of this changing landscape conditions begins with the aim of preserving the distinctive identity of the sites, which includes the active but soon to be discontinued Broadcroft Quarry and the now disused Yeolands Quarry.
A design and workflow strategy will prepare for the afterlife of the site, utilising the process of 3D-scanning at various resolutions. This will record distinct elements of the site, which will be used to develop new proposals set to occur within the landscape.
An investigation into how machine post-processing and human touch captures and broadcasts past spatial essence. The model demonstrates an active design intervention developed in parallel with the dynamic changes of the site.
The model was carved by hand and with a CNC machine. The surface was analysed using a high-resolution 3D scanner and applied the lightest finish to calibrate the surface without disrupting or altering the original topography.
