The School for Ancestral Worship

Project details

Student Mayling Ly
Programme
Unit UG3
Year 2

The project is a school on Mare Street, Hackney. It is based on Vietnamese ancestral worship exploring ideas of rituals, celebration, and the origins of worship.

Vietnamese culture and traditions have been forgotten by the children of some Vietnamese immigrants in Hackney. The school provides a space for these children to learn about the culture of Vietnam, specifically the significance of ancestral worship.

There is a common belief in the afterlife where our ancestors live in another realm. The living communicates with their ancestors through an altar that provides offerings to take care of them in the afterlife. Students are taught the rituals involved in worship through the act of making and receiving their ancestors’ wisdom. Student work is displayed during a ceremony that takes place each lunar new year.
