In light of global issues such as a climate and ecological emergency, Britain and its leaders must nurture a culture of collaboration in architectural education to meaningfully address them. This project proposes a third iteration of The Bartlett School of Architecture. In contrast to the building’s previous two iterations, Wates House (1975) and The Bartlett (2016), the next iteration will be constructed over the course of a thousand years by it’s students and tutors. Porcelain clay, extracted from the construction of the new Elizabeth Line, becomes the material used by the collaborating students and tutors to redefine the cultural and architectural character of the school.
Over the next thousand years future generations of the building’s inhabitants will recover a lost material culture of hand-crafted ceramics. The interchangeable orchestra of students and tutors will weave themselves together through the poetic symphony of a shared material culture, ushering in a new era in architectural education: 'The Age of Belonging'.
The new 22 Gordon Street will transcend into a rich tapestry of history, where one’s mark on the school is immortalised through their own ceramic interventions.
A new collaborative material culture ascends the process of learning and sharing of information to the forefront of architectural education.
The studio floors are incubators of design, composed to heighten collaborative learning, while providing agency for its users to recalibrate architectural education.
