Unit UG4
Year 3

A speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicenc’d Printing, is among history’s most influential philosophical defences of the principle of a right to freedom of speech. The celebration of this principle through the medium of printing informed the programme of a seditious printing press and media centre in Westminster village.

Abingdon Green, sitting adjacent to the House of Lords, is commonly used by broadcasting conglomerates for news reports, which makes use of the revered background of the Houses of Parliament. Due to its semi-permanent and unregulated usage, the site continues to confuse and is underused.

The historical precedents of Thorney Island, the Cottonian Library and the Doulton Pottery feed into the aim of the architecture to create transparency into the murky world of political broadcast. Relishing the aesthetic power of pamphlets, the architecture will shift and be marked by individual acts of dissent. It shall immortalise protests of the past for the public to explore and critique how the memories and intent of written work shift through anamnesis and mistranslation.
