An expression by excavation is a symphony of performance, carving, and construction. Rwanda has an unexplored potential in stone fabrication. East African Granite Industries have developed industrial practices that have been destructive to Rwanda’s geology. This project articulates a micro-quarrying Strategy, which highlights the art of traditional excavation, transportation, and construction techniques. Creating a new landscape restoration methodology that conforms to the values of ‘Umuganda’; working into the quarry with a communal effort. The project is driven by recycling and reusing locally sourced materials, exploring a relationship between stone and wood, specifically how wooden structures can facilitate the movement of stone.
Across Rwanda, dance, music and acting are valued practices for entertainment and expression. This proposal for a theatre embedded in a quarry was influenced by the work of Komera, an organisation that promotes local craftsmanship and carpentry to educate and create employment for the local community. The theatre expands their facilities and integrates their practices, such as weaving, into the building’s function and materiality.
