Maker’s Yard: A Material Testbed Expo
This project is a scheme that explores materials, where the architecture of the yard creates a 1:1 testbed for fragments and components. This shows the capability of local and regional materials. The maker’s yard is a village intervention designed to merge with the existing village model. It acts as a catalyst, fostering the development of sustainable settlement schemes.
Bamboo is locally grown on steep topographical grounds and supports slope soil retention. It also can be used for construction and fuel, while diversifying local agriculture. The continual excavation of soil and brick firing production leaves a footprint on the landscape of flattened fields. This allows for grounds of future construction and habitation.
Gihombo, a quiet area of Rwanda, is the ideal testing ground for the development of a sustainable blueprint for offgrid formations and the emergence of a scheme that corresponds to the Rwandan village model.
