History is in the Mud: A Community Research Centre for Tollesbury Wick
The project develops an investigation that straddles both the fragile ecosystem at Tollesbury Wick and the exceptionally rich archaeological deposits preserved in the salt marshes. It addresses and negotiates the tensions between archaeological activities, habitat preservation, and public access, and proposes a community research centre that treads and rests lightly on the ground. This provides a space for multidisciplinary research that engages the local community and visitors in active fieldwork and nurtures a wider cultural consciousness of the environmental and historic value of the area.
The project works with the landscape and protects the saltmarshes. It rekindles a love for the region by nurturing a deeper understanding of the area's history by archaeological excavation and exhibition.
The proposal is sited at the saltmarsh near the village of Tollesbury, one of many areas on the east coast of England, which by 2121 will be under the flood line.
The proposed space invites locals and visitors to discover the rich history that lies in the ground, and encourages people to consider marshlands as important assets to ecosystems.
One of the key design drivers is the anatomy of bird feet. The extendable footings of the structure accommodate the terrain's different shapes and adapt to rising sea levels.
To facilitate the site-wide survey of the Blackwater Estuary, the building is designed for deconstruction and rapid reconstruction at different locations.
