The Peterborough Dojo

Project details

Programme
Unit UG7
Year 3

We live in a world where large volumes of materials are not recycled, contributing to the pollution and destruction of the environment.

This project reuses rubber crumbs from used rubber tyres as a material for wall insulation. The use of the material addresses the global energy shortage – and rising energy costs – exacerbated by poor insulation in UK buildings.

The building has two primary uses: a child day care centre and martial arts studio. Martial arts enable young children to develop foundational skills that can their discipline and health (both mental and physical).

The building is constructed using moulded modular crumb rubber bricks, which reference methods derived from Japanese joinery. The design is merged with part of the original building that is retained to preserve the heritage of Peterborough’s brickwork.
