Tate Connect

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 1
Year 3

Tate Connect proposes the conversion of the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station into a 24-hour building with dual functionality: providing a hub of workspaces, and connecting a 21st century audience with contemporary audio-visual experiences.

The project addresses the local digital divide by providing creating a free and accessible hub of connectivity and creativity for neighbourhood locals and Londoners alike. In the daytime, the building functions as an open co-working and exhibition space. The building comes alive at night with dancing, lights and music blasting while the workspaces continue to operate in parallel, serving a city that never sleeps.

The new additions to the building wrap the existing fabric to form circulatory breakout spaces from the party, suspending into the main halls with balconies. The workspaces are separated from the party spaces, with some being acoustically insulated while others are only visually separated. The wrap of the building connects to a core with the essential functions of a night-time space: bathrooms, bar, and foyer. The bathrooms are at the top and feature a social hand-washing experience that challenges the convention.

The party is in full effect, bringing the power station alive again. The central axis spills into the main space through platforms, creating secondary and tertiary spaces.

Exploded Isometric

The new additions to the existing building form a lightweight wrap around the existing volumes, with workspaces and viewing platforms suspended into the power station halls.

The Boiler House Short Section

The integrated strategy is shown, with suspended structure and HVAC integration. The creation of different levels and degrees of separation of space is showcased.
