Three artists’ studios, Fugato Studio (a timber workshop), Rondo Studio (an artist’s lounge) and Cadenza Studio (a performance space) are proposed in an area near Highgate Cemetery to celebrate the art practice of sculptress, Anna Mahler. The design proposal aims for a detailed study of varied materials in response to the spatial needs of various artistic activities sponsored by the Anna Mahler Foundation.
Journalist Patricia Reis describes the work of Anna Mahler as ‘Memory is what left incomplete in their final forms.’ By creating a sequence of workshop spaces, the proposal aims to encourage people to think about workshop spaces and appreciate the practices of Anna Mahler, the fallen idol.
Structurally, this project seeks for an optimal solution of a large-scale suspended steel frame system. The stability of columns and several connection details are studied.
Environmentally, the energy consumption benchmarks under different criteria were set. Different iterations involving passive measures, HVAC systems, natural lighting strategies and potential renewable energies were investigated.
The artists’ studios are located at three levels to form a unique relationship – below, immersed, above – with the surrounding trees. A roof path supported by tall columns was designed to provide viewing spots for the sceneries of the neighbourhood.
‘Suturing space’ refers to the interlinking of a series of structural elements which lead to overall structural stability.
The image shows the construction layers, fenestration strategies, natural light systems, building facade treatments, and some of the structural details.
