Waterhelming

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 6
Year 3

This project travels back to the time and space of the 1990s. At this time - The Service Tower, by Grimshaw Architects, also known as ‘tower of toilets’ was taken down. The dismembered building cadaver is to be reused for an assemblage of localised wastewater treatment plants. The original glass reinforced polymer toilet pods and steel frame are reconfigured and adapted for the functional needs.

The by-product of this process can feed a launderette and mushroom farm at the bottom using the purified water and bio-solids. As in the 1980s laundry machines are still not widely affordable and laundromats were essential for households, these spaces created and maintained a place for the local community to gather and interact organically.

The water treatment process uses gravitational potential energy and generated natural gas natural gas to minimise system energy use. The system is to be tested first in Flimwell, treating household wastewater from the town. Then it is populated around the urban voids of Greater London.
